Biology Article Genetically Modified Babies - 550 Words
Biology Article: Genetically Modified Babies (Essay Sample) Content: Biology Article: Genetically Modified Babies Students NameInstitutional affiliationCourseDateGenetically modified babiesThe article Genetically modified babies published on the New York Times is one of the amazing realities on how biological concepts are affecting our lives. In this article, Marcy (2014) suggests that scientists through Food and Drugs Administration are in the final stages of identifying radical biological procedures that will produce genetically modified babies. This technology will be one of the scientific breakthroughs in the 21st century. For many years, human beings have unsuccessfully tried to create other human beings with specific features. It is proposed in this technology that every cell in the bodies of babies born will be passed on to other future generations together with all other alterations (Marcy, 2014). The author suggests that one of the widely used biological technologies in this technology is the mitochondrion manipulation techno logies. This technology involves the removal of the nuclear material form the embryo of a woman with inheritable mitochondrial disease. The embryo will then be inserted into a healthy embryo of a donor whose nuclear material has been discarded. Therefore, the offspring will carry genetic materials from the mitochondrial DNA of the donor, DNA of the mother and the father. This technology is meant to curb the disorder associated with mitochondrion failure to convert food into energy resulting to genetic abnormalities. It is important to note that mitochondrion disorders caused by mutations are passed down from the mother to the offspring. This article is highly related to this course. First, the basis of the article is about life. Biology is all about life. The idea of creating genetically modified babies is to support the continuity of life. Secondly, the article utilizes the concepts of the cell, the mitochondrion technologies. The Mitochondrion is one of the widely known parts of a cell due to its ability to convert food into energy. A cell is the fundamental basis of learning biology. Nobody can learn biology without understanding the concepts of the cell (Butler, 2005). Other concepts such as mutations addressed in this article are important concepts addressed in this course. In life sciences, understanding the concepts of mutation is important in understanding how cells and nucleotides change in organisms to create new genetic elements (Butler, 2005).This course provides a good background in understanding this article. Since this course is largely focused on life sciences, one will find it easy to understand concepts addressed in this article. The course also provides knowledge to understand the broader area of gene technology. Genetics is one of the major topics in life sciences. The article caught my attention due to the issue of "genetically modified babies. Over the recent past, many people have been engaged on debates over the issue of genetically modified organisms (Hartl, Ruvolo, 2012). There is a huge concern over the dangers associated with the genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms touch different aspects of life for both plants and animals. However, if the dangers associated with genetically modified organisms are reduced, then they are one of the best ways to go in fighting issues such as genetic disorders and food security. Research in th...
