This technology involves the removal of the nuclear material form the embryo of a woman with inheritable mitochondrial disease. The embryo will then be inserted into a healthy embryo of a donor whose nuclear material has been discarded. Therefore, the offspring will carry genetic materials from the mitochondrial DNA of the donor, DNA of the mother and the father. This technology is meant to curb the disorder associated with mitochondrion failure to convert food into energy resulting to genetic abnormalities. It is important to note that mitochondrion disorders caused by mutations are passed down from the mother to the offspring.This article is highly related to this course.
